Primary function

This position would be required to provide family staff lawyer services at the Family Law Service Centre, in family courts, and advice settings.

Key accountabilities

• Act as Duty Counsel
• Provide Enhanced Duty Counsel Services
• Accept Legal Aid Certificates and provide full representation to LAO clients including trials
• Provide family law services as required in both family and child protection files
• Ensure a high quality of legal work in a cost effective manner
• Record data and produce reports as required
• Work in the Windsor Courthouses and local advice clinics
• Other duties as assigned

Required skills & experience

• Member in good standing with the Law Society of Upper Canada
• Knowledge and experience of relevant family law legislation, including child protection law
• Prior family law court experience
• Sound knowledge of Legal Aid Ontario’s operations and mandate
• Training or advocacy experience in relation to mental health issues
• Client focused
• Ability to work independently and in a fast-paced environment
• good problem solving skills and sound judgment
• Personal motivation and accountability
• Teamwork and collaborative skills
• Valid Drivers License and access to transportation
• Demonstrated ability to use latest communication technologies including Smartphones; Blackberry’s and iPhone.
• A valid driver’s licence and access to a vehicle
• Must have intermediate knowledge of the following Microsoft programs; Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Divorcemate. Experience with Legal Files Access would be assets.

Preferred Skills & Experiences:
• Ability to communicate in French/English is an asset

First Preference will be given to current Lawyer applicants who are on the LAO redeployment list.

This position is collectively represented by the Society of Energy Professionals (SEP) and the successful incumbent will be governed by the provisions of a collective agreement and subject to union dues once negotiated.
